Three entrepreneurs

sharing a passion for their community

Ramon Velazquez Owner

Rooted in a legacy of community service fostered by his father, Ramon has a history of giving back to the city he grew up in. Proudly born and raised in Spanish Harlem, Ramon saw a life filled with endless possibilities. But he also realized the large discrepancy of wealth within this city, and felt compelled to help those in need. Aiding in the distribution of food to thousands, while nurturing relationships within the community, Ramon had a vision of hope and healing. Now with the opening of Upperz Cafe & Bar, he is trying to unite local residents with a space that serves as a gathering spot for the neighborhood. He hopes it will bring connection and belonging, along with comforting drinks and food.

Marilyn Velazquez Owner

With a career spanning 20 years as a nurse and supervisor for a home care agency, Marilyn brings a deep commitment to excellence in healthcare. And now she brings the same sense of value and commitment to her new venture as owner of Upperz Cafe & Bar.

Marilyn’s personal journey as a mother and caregiver has shaped who she is. From an early age she was instilled with a deep sense of empathy through the selfless acts of her parents, who involved her in their efforts to feed the homeless in NYC. It helped to reinforce her commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others, and fostering a sense of community engagement.

She is excited to embark on this new adventure. Her passion is to create a warm and welcoming space. Marilyn aims to start up a unique establishment that not only serves delicious food and beverages, but also encourages a sense of inclusivity.

Fern Gellin Owner

Fern is a passionate and self-motivated individual. He has an entrepreneurial spirit that drives him to go after whatever he sets his mind to. Fern’s been in the business world for more than 15 years. But when he’s not in grind mode, you can find him breaking a sweat on the soccer field, traveling abroad to catch an international match or exploring new cultures.

Fern spent many years advising business owners on opening and expanding their restaurants and bars across all five boroughs of New York City. He prides himself on the relationships he’s built along the way, and that he continues to nurture today. His belief in collaboration and making genuine connections is what led him to team up with two longtime friends in launching Upperz Cafe & Bar.

Ultimately, Fern wants to create a positive impact by building a chill spot where the local community can bond. Whether it’s over a coffee or one of Upperz innovative beverages, his hope is to bring people together.
